The amazingly talented Oleg Lipchenko has asked us to remind everyone he will be talking at the Fall meeting of the Lewis Carroll Societ of North America, Nov 6, in NYC. Subject is intriguingly titled “Butcher in the Ruff: Rendering the Snark (A Work in Progress)” , & uses this even more intriguing quote as his jumping off point:
The assumption which states that “It’s a Boo-…” applies to Boots* seems to be plausible, but is based on written word “Boots”, still vocally “oo” means a long “u” and therefore in this case “Boots” has no priority over “Butcher”. It probably was indeed, “It’s a Bo-o-o-o-o-o-o-tcher!” I would rather believe in this interpretation, because in the poem, Butcher was described in great detail, and acted as one of the front characters, unlike Boots, who was just a “chorus member”. Actually, we even don’t know who Boots is at all…
*Larry Shaw The Baker Murder case, cit. by The Annotated Snark by Martin Gardner.
Having seen Oleg’s extraordinarily beautful illustrations for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which we featured in this blog a while back, we can’t wait for this latest project to be completed, and urge anyone who will be in the vicinity to go along to this meeting. Details are available at the LCSNA website.

Er, isn’t ‘It’s a Boo…’ just the first syllable of ‘Boojum’?

There is a production of “Boojum! Nonsense, Truth, and Lewis Carroll” in Chicago, 16 performances, first night 18 November by Opera Vanguard in association with Caffeine Theatre. As a joint author I want everyone who can get there to see it. I’m going to be fascinated to see what they do with the show; it sounds like a wonderful cast with a great deal of energy and enthusiasm. Some of the assumptions of the play are pre-Leach and Dreamchild, but not offensively, I think, or dogmatically stated. It has some lively and some lovely music (written by the other collaborator). You know you want to be there!

Peter, the very best of luck. I wish I could be there.
Your caveat is unnecessary, I can’t imagine you doing anything offensively or dogmatically.
All the best
Mike

Dear Justin,
sure it is, but “Snark” (as well as “Alice”) was read and analyzed back and forth and across, and every word of it was studied with the magnified glass. So, “Carrolliana” is full of researchers studies, and sometimes parodies of “scientific” studies appear, Larry Show’s “The Baker Murder case” is one of them. I just went a bit further with my transcription of those mysterious words “It’s a Boo…” 🙂

I had a feeling it wasn’t altogether serious! Actually I love this sort of offbeat textual analysis as long as it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I must read The Baker Murder Case if I can get hold of a copy.
Actually I have a theory the Baker is himself a murderer, must see if Mr Show’s analysis concurs…
I love your artwork. Wish I could make the talk, but sadly I’m the wrong side of the Atlantic.
