{"id":333,"date":"2010-08-27T23:38:56","date_gmt":"2010-08-27T23:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carrollmyth.wordpress.com\/?p=333"},"modified":"2010-08-27T23:38:56","modified_gmt":"2010-08-27T23:38:56","slug":"wiki-weird-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/contrariwise.info\/blog\/2010\/08\/27\/wiki-weird-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"wiki-weird II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve been fatally distracted from this blog by our Other Lives, but someone (thank you JedO) just told us about a little something\u00a0 on Wiki we had to pass on.<\/p>\n<p>Of course\u00a0 Lewis Carroll&#8217;s\u00a0 Wikipedia \u00a0 page is prone to outbursts of Tourette&#8217;s at the best of times, with whole sections being replaced with pithy legends such as &#8216;<em>he was a wanker<\/em>&#8216;, and\u00a0 &#8216;<em>his family were all donuts<\/em>&#8216; ,\u00a0 but here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_Carroll#The_.27Carroll_Myth.27\">recent addition<\/a> a little more literate that doesn&#8217;t <em>seem <\/em>to be aiming at Absurdism, but still has me slightly bewildered:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Edward Wakeling, editor of the 10-volume &#8220;Lewis Carroll&#8217;s Diaries&#8221; has always maintained that there is no &#8220;myth&#8221; and Jenny Woolf, while agreeing that Carroll&#8217;s image has been comprehensively misrepresented in the past, believes that this can be attributed to Carroll&#8217;s own behaviour and in particular his tendency to self-caricature in later life<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Okay.\u00a0 Couple of things to ponder &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>1. Edward Wakeling <em>does not<\/em> maintain there is\u00a0 &#8216;no myth&#8217;, in fact he\u00a0 has a link on his own\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wakeling.demon.co.uk\/\">website<\/a> entitled &#8216;<em>Myths About Lewis Carroll&#8217;<\/em>, with a\u00a0 long list of\u00a0 said myths, many of which are identical with those we examine.<\/p>\n<p>2. Anyone have any idea\u00a0 what the difference is between a life that is mythic and one that has been &#8216;comprehensively misrepresented&#8217;? Or what<strong><strong> &#8220;this can be attributed to Carroll&#8217;s own behaviour and in particular his tendency to self-caricature in later life<\/strong>&#8221; <\/strong>actually <em>means<\/em>?\u00a0 That\u00a0 poor Carroll was responsible for all the lies and nonsense said about him\u00a0 for a hundred years and\u00a0 more after his death? And <em>that<\/em> means, somehow (how?) that there&#8217;s no myth? Just a &#8216;comprehensive misrepresentation&#8217; that is all Carroll&#8217;s own fault?<\/p>\n<p>Correct me if I&#8217;m wrong but isn&#8217;t this semantic gibberish?<\/p>\n<p>We have no idea who wrote this, but we think Mr W and Ms W should probably be informed in case they want to make changes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve been fatally distracted from this blog by our Other Lives, but someone (thank you JedO) just told us about a little something\u00a0 on Wiki we had to pass on.
